SaaStr published a public report card grading 152 B2B APIs on agent-readiness, and the bottom of the list includes some of the most-installed martech platforms in the enterprise. Marketo scored 50 out of 100. Gainsight scored 47. Workday scored 42. ActiveCampaign scored 53. Mailchimp scored 57. At the top sit OpenAI and Anthropic, both at 90.
Why the API now matters more than the UI
“The single biggest variable in whether a vendor stays or goes hasn’t been the UI,” SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin said. “It hasn’t been the price. It hasn’t been the brand. It’s been the API.” Lemkin derived the report card from running more than 20 AI agents in production over 18 months.
Earlier this year, roughly $300 billion in market value evaporated across software stocks after Anthropic released Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Deloitte, citing Gartner, projects 35% of point-product SaaS tools will be replaced by AI agents or absorbed into larger agent ecosystems by 2030.
Which martech categories got hit
Scott Brinker and Frans Riemersma frame the shift in their annual Martech for 2026 report. “AI agents are real, and they are rewiring the ways marketers market,” they wrote. “But the hype still exceeds reality.” Their data: 90.3% of marketing teams already run AI agents somewhere in their stack. Enterprises most often run agents embedded inside existing platforms (68%), not as replacements.
Jen Grant, CMO of Quiq, put it this way: “Systems of record — your CRM, your data warehouse, your core operating platforms — are not going away. What is shifting is the layer above them.”
Marketing automation
Marketo’s 50/100 breaks down to fives across API design, webhooks, rate limits, SDKs and docs, and a 4 out of 10 on agent readiness. The REST API allocates 50,000 calls per day — a single agent running a segmentation workflow can burn through that in hours. The report card’s note: “Dated API architecture… and complex Launchpoint auth make it one of the least agent-friendly marketing platforms.”
Customer success
Gainsight scored 47 (C), with a 3 out of 10 on SDKs and docs and 4 out of 10 on agent readiness. Freshdesk scored 58 (C+). Intercom Fin scored 70 (B), earning 9 out of 10 on agent readiness — the only player in the category that explicitly built an AI agent platform for third-party developers.
Sales intelligence
Clay led the category at 75 (B+) with 9 out of 10 on agent readiness. Lemkin called it “practically a visual agent builder.” Gong (63), Outreach (65), and Hunter.io (60) lagged behind. The category averages 7.0 out of 10 on agent readiness, pulled up almost entirely by Clay.
CRM
HubSpot scored 80 (A-). Salesforce scored 75 (B+) thanks to Agentforce 360, which earned 9 out of 10 on agent readiness. Zoho CRM scored 57. Freshsales scored 55.
What marketers should ask their vendors
For an operator, the report card reads as a diagnostic, not a shopping list. The questions worth raising at renewal:
- Does the platform’s API have rate limits an agent would burn through during a segmentation run?
- Can it push real-time updates via webhooks, or does an agent have to poll constantly?
- Is there a sandbox to test agent workflows without touching live data?
- If an agent retries a failed action, will it create duplicate contacts or records?
Where the agents are already pulling away
Marketing platforms averaged 6.1 out of 10 on agent readiness. Customer success averaged 6.3. Anything scoring below 5 — Marketo (4), Gainsight (4), Heap (3) — “hitting that wall is almost certain,” per the report card authors. Lemkin wrote: “They built empires with a human UI as the product. The API was an afterthought. The brand was the screen the rep logged into every morning. That worked for 15 years. It doesn’t work now.”
The vendors already building outward-facing agent interfaces — HubSpot with its Breeze AI Agent APIs, Intercom with the Fin API Platform, Salesforce with Agentforce 360 — are the ones gaining ground. The platforms whose APIs were afterthoughts are the ones making themselves replaceable. Lemkin predicted a “renaissance of 1 million new SaaS apps” built on vibe coding — much of it likely to cannibalize the bottom of this report card first.
