A majority of marketers are already optimizing their content for AI-generated search answers, according to an analysis by UK agency SEO Essex. The same research finds Google query volume has hit an all-time high.

The finding marks a practical shift in the search trade. Optimization work is no longer aimed solely at classic blue links; teams are now structuring content so that AI-generated summaries and answer engines cite or surface it.

What does the analysis actually show?

SEO Essex reviewed marketer behavior and found that more than half of the professionals it surveyed have moved beyond planning. They have already implemented optimization tactics aimed at AI-generated answers in search results.

At the same time, the volume of queries processed by Google has reached its highest level on record. The two trends reinforce each other: more searches mean more AI-generated answers served, and more AI answers mean more incentive for marketers to optimize for them.

Why is this happening now?

Google now surfaces AI-generated answers directly in results pages for a growing share of queries. Users often get their answer without clicking through to any website. That changes the economics of search traffic.

For operators, the risk is concrete. If an AI summary answers the user's question, the click that would have gone to an organic listing disappears. Marketers who optimize for the answers themselves — rather than only for rankings — are trying to stay visible inside the answer layer.

Who is doing it?

The analysis positions the shift as majority behavior, not an early-adopter niche. In practical terms:

  • Over half of marketers surveyed have already started optimizing for AI-generated search answers.
  • Google query volume is at an all-time high, increasing the surface area where AI answers appear.
  • The change spans planning-stage and implementation-stage work, meaning agencies and in-house teams alike are adjusting.

What should operators take from it?

The data point that matters is the majority figure. When more than half of a professional cohort has already acted, the tactic has moved from experiment to standard practice. Operators who have not started risk competing for clicks in a results page that increasingly answers questions itself.

SEO Essex's analysis frames the situation plainly: the query pie keeps growing, but the click distribution underneath it is changing shape. Marketers are responding by optimizing for where the answers come from, not just where the links rank.
