Elon Musk has laid out his vision for an AI-led advertising future on X, with the platform's Grok chatbot positioned at the center of how brands will buy and run campaigns, Digiday reports.
The outline from Musk points to a model where advertisers lean on Grok to handle much of the work that agencies and media buyers currently do manually. Rather than navigating X's ad manager themselves, brands would brief the AI, and Grok would generate targeting, creative variants, and campaign execution.
The push comes as X continues its effort to win back advertisers. The platform lost a large share of its top-spending brands following Musk's 2022 acquisition, and ad revenue has yet to fully recover. An AI-driven buying process could lower the barrier for smaller advertisers who lack the resources to run sophisticated campaigns — and reduce the operational cost of serving them.
For X, the calculus is straightforward. Advertising still accounts for the bulk of the company's revenue, and Musk has repeatedly said he wants to shift the business toward subscriptions and data licensing while keeping ads as the core engine. Grok-based ad tools would tie the company's AI investment directly to its largest income stream.
The plan also fits a broader industry pattern. Meta and Google already offer AI tools that automatically generate creative and set targeting, and both companies credit those systems with pulling more spend from small and mid-sized advertisers. X is effectively proposing to go further: making the AI the primary interface for ad buying rather than an optional assistant.
Advertisers will want proof before committing. Key questions include how Grok will handle brand safety — a persistent sore point on X since Musk took over — and whether AI-generated campaigns will meet the performance standards that media buyers demand. None of that is settled by an outline.
Still, the direction is clear. Musk is betting that the same AI technology powering Grok can rebuild X's advertising business by automating the parts of it that advertisers find expensive and slow. Whether brands follow depends on execution, pricing, and measurable results.
